Kijiji adds accountability to pet sales ads online – that means the transaction can be used to ensure the entity posting the ad is NOT a puppy mill or backyard breeder. Yea!
Breaking news – Kijiji Adds Accountability for Pet Ads! We heard this on 680 AM Radio yesterday afternoon, and the whoop I let out in the car almost stopped traffic! Am SOOO happy about the Kijiji news!
It’s not the amount of the charge, which is a nominal 5 bucks, well 4.99 to be exact, plus tax I imagine. CTV News reports “To add an extra level of accountability, the fee will have to be paid by credit card or using a PayPal account.” That means the transaction can be used to ensure the entity posting the ad is NOT a puppy mill or backyard breeder. 680 News corroborated that fact on their report yesterday too.
The official statement from Kijiji: “this measure provides Kijiji with additional information to assist in actions against illegal pet vendors. We will also donate a portion of fees generated to animal welfare agencies across Canada.”
Kijiji has proven that big business can work with animal welfare agencies to improve the treatment of animals. Their cooperation has played a significant role in New Brunswick’s success in virtually eliminating puppy mills.
New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Executive Director Mr. Hilary T. Howes
Shawn McIntyre, the company’s community relations manager, said the plan has been in the works for some time, as reported to CTV Atlantic.
This came after many months of conversations with partners of ours in the animal welfare industry,” “Obviously, we’ve been looking for ways to make our pets category a safer channel for users to bring home animals.
Hopefully all other online sales sites will ultimately follow the lead of Craigslist, another classified site, which no longer allows the sale of household pets at all. Hopefully this moves us farther down the line of not treating sentient beings as chattel.
