For Janet, Andrea and Jean Krawec of Doggy XO Daycare, the word “daycare” is a misnomer. That’s because the “care” they provide during the “day” to their small dog charges is so much more than just babysitting, which is what people generally think of when that word is used.
Doggy XO Daycare is exclusively for small dogs. The gals chose this doggy daycare niche as a direct result of unsatisfying experiences as customers of other doggy daycare facilities. Not that those facilities were of themselves anything other than well run. Rather they noticed that their tiny dogs, three chihuahuas between them, weren’t socializing and interacting amongst the mix of larger-breed dogs typical of most daycares. So their dogs were reaping only a tiny bit of the benefit of attending a daycare.
Doggy XO Daycare promotes enrichment
They decided to take what they experienced and incorporate solutions for small dogs into their own practice. Doggy XO Daycare caters exclusively to smaller breeds, specifically dogs under 35 pounds. Their focus is on enrichment for the dogs, where dogs can come and learn and play and build confidence and not just be dropped off at a babysitting service. Training by means of a customized approach for each dog plays a large part as well, in close collaboration with the dog’s owners.
The Krawecs have spent as much time thinking about its human clients in designing the space and its event programming. Doggy XO Daycare aims to be a fun, easy going community centre, where learning materials are stocked in the Lounge, accessible to members as their dogs romp in the playroom adjoined. Upcoming on the event list are movies nights, where people can come hang out with their dog, socials like singles’ nights, and of course, small breed and breed specific meet up groups – every doggy needs a date night with their own kind now and then!
Members can drop their furbabies off for an hour, 2, 3, half a day or all day – Doggy XO Daycare are more than willing to be flexible to accommodate their members.
Special Treatment for Foster Dogs and Rescues
Foster dogs and rescue groups figure prominently in plans for the space. Canadian Chihuahua Rescue and Transport will start the programming with a chihuahua meet up this summer, and friend-raisers and fund-raisers to come this fall. ”We want to offer discounts to foster dog families to come to Doggy XO Daycare and work with me, my sister and my mother and see if we can get these dogs to a point where they would be wonderful additions to any home,” states Andrea.
