Miracle pup Duke underwent a critical surgery to remove his right hind leg and to save his life, just before his first birthday on July 31.
The surgery, though risky, was a success! It was discovered after removing the leg that where there should have been bone marrow there was pus: an infection.
The success of the surgery in combination with the extensive medical treatment Duke has received means that Duke is now on the road to recovery. This road will not be an easy one.
Now that the infection in Duke’s leg is gone, we are working on managing his Immune Mediated Polyarthritis (IMPA). Basically, Duke’s own body is attacking his joints. The good news is that this condition can be managed, and Duke can live a long and happy life.
Duke’s vets now need to find the right combination of medications that will manage the pain and swelling associated with Duke’s condition. This can take months of experimenting with different medications, dosages, and of course lots of blood tests, but we are all committed to this boy.
Duke’s vet bills are now well over $10,000. As a small rescue, this is not something we can manage on our own. But we refuse to give up on this loving boy. He has continued to fight and has refused to give up. We have been fortunate enough to receive tons of support from family, friends, fans of HBR, and other organizations who have happened to hear Duke’s story.
