A little 9-10 year old beagle named Fran, overflowing with courage and faith in humans despite it all – in other words, fully armed with the very best beagle survival skills – has arrived at our repair shop door. Her rescue hero story didn’t start with us. She’s got an entire army of compassionate soldiers fighting for her.
You’d think after all these years of running a rescue, I’d be prepared for anything. But I’m not. The tears still fall. The heart still aches. And the question that never gets answered keeps repeating - Why?
Here’s the good news. Even though we cry and we hurt and we never get the answer to that question — we rise above it. With every beagle we save, we rise above it.
Saved by Compassion for Beagles
First came Rachel – Investigating Officer for the OSPCA, who was called to Fran’s home for good reason. For almost 3 years, Fran had been carrying a heavy burden – literally. Hanging from her chest was a tumour half the size of her own body weight. It was dragging on the floor. She couldn’t walk, much less run and frolic like beagles are meant to do.
Her owner didn’t understand the pain Fran was suffering. Her owner didn’t have the financial means to do anything about it either. Maybe those are the best answers we’re going to get for our age old question. But we must be grateful for the decision her owner made that day. She relinquished ownership of Fran to the OSPCA. She did the right thing, finally.
And then Rachael followed her instincts. Instead of delivering her to the shelter, she rushed her to the vet clinic the shelter typically uses for emergencies – the 404 Veterinary Emergency & Referral Hospital. The surgeons didn’t hesitate. After all, it was a shocking sight.
They offered to remove the mass at absolutely no cost.
That was earlier this month. Do you know what Fran is up to now? She zooms around the clinic like a race car or…like a true beagle. She’s also charmed everyone she’s met…like a true beagle. From the investigating officer to the surgeons to the ICU staff – she’s effortlessly stolen everyone’s heart.
Now, it’s our turn.
Big on Beagles Rescue
Thanks to Rachel, Investigating Officer for the OSPCA, Fran arrived at BEACHES ANIMAL HOSPITAL just in time for her exam under the care of Big on Beagles Rescue. Our Dr. Koszti had a look at her and all went well. He thinks she’s a very sweet dog!
When he saw the “Before” pics, he shook his head. He said that it is likely the largest tumour he’s ever seen. Although he removed an similarly large mass from a dog before, that dog was a much larger breed. He knows just how uncomfortable Fran must have been carrying all the weight and that it would have been a much easier surgery for her had the mass been removed much sooner.
The good news is the bloodwork looks great and although we’ll want to re-check it in a week or so to ensure everything continues to look good following such a huge surgery, she should have a very bright future ahead! The mass was benign and there is no sign of concern for cancer at this time. Even her teeth aren’t too bad but we will do a dentistry once she’s had time to recover fully from this major operation. She’ll also receive her vaccinations and HW preventative while staying at our vet clinic.
Stay tuned for further pupdates as Franny makes the transition to us. We are very hopeful we’ll find the perfect foster home for her to enjoy once her vetting is complete!
