Here on Furever, we’re bringing you notice of wonderful graphic novel that might otherwise not come across your transom. We know you all love the book reviews we’ve done in the past; our readers have enjoyed everything from “Morley and Me” to “My Dog the Paradox.” With Canine Classics, we’re appealing to the high literature lovers. Or to those who might think twice about diving into O.Henry and P.G. Wodehouse.
The editors of Canine Classics have done all the legwork (eyework?) to find amazing dog stories written by legendary authors of classic literature – authors who have used dogs as the central protagonists in their stories.
Ray Bradbury‘s heart-rending story The Emissary is included, complete with the signature spooky and unexpected twisted ending, brilliantly illustrated by John Findley. You think you don’t care for poetry, but you may find you want to make a poster of the page featuring John Lehman‘s ode What I Learn from Dogs illustrated by Milton Knight. Ulysses and the Dogman illustrated by Jim McMunn will show you just how “classic” O Henry’s sensibilities are. Though Henry wrote the story in 1911, its just as relevant, and mind-expanding today, especially with the support of graphics.
Canine Classics is a flip book, a two-in-one volume. That is to say it flips over and the up-side-down other half of the tome includes the same graphic accompaniment to works of literature with cats as the focus. H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, even Kafka all wrote stories about cats!
It is certainly a gorgeous book. Bibliophiles and comic book lovers that also happen to love companion animals and rich, supple art will enjoy Canine/Feline Classics immensely.
Digital editions are now available for iPhone, iPad, Android devices and computer viewing from Comixology, OverDrive, iVerse Media and Ave! Comics. Canine/Feline Classics is the 25th volume in the Graphic Classics series of comics adaptations of classic literature.
